Apart from wildlife, the park also has a wonderful landscape of glaciers, waterfalls and primeval forests. Sherpas are known for their hospitality and warmth, and it is not uncommon for them to invite hikers to their home for tea or a meal.
Makalu Base Camp Trek is a challenging trek that requires good physical fitness. The trail can be difficult at times, especially at high altitudes, but the reward of reaching base camp is worth the effort. The trek is best done in spring (April-May) and autumn (September-November), when the weather is mild and the sky is clear. Despite its remote location, Makalu Base Camp Trek is well equipped with lodges and teahouses that provide basic accommodation and catering services. This makes the tour suitable for people of all ages and abilities, making it a great option for beginners and seasoned adventurers alike.Makalu Base Camp Trek starts from Kathmandu after an internal flight to Tumlingtari, a small town in the Sankhuwasabha region of Nepal. From Tumlingtar, the trail gradually ascends through lush rhododendrons and bamboo forests, passing the small villages of Chichila and Numi. The route then crosses several suspension bridges over the Arun River, offering spectacular views of the river and surrounding valleys. On the Makalu Base Camp hiking trail, hikers will have the opportunity to interact with local communities, learn about their customs and traditions, and gain a deeper understanding of the region’s unique culture.
As you go up the road, the terrain suddenly becomes rough and rocky. The Makalu Base Camp hiking route then passes through Shipton La Pass and Keke La Pass, offering panoramic views of the peaks of the Makalu Range. The final leg of the journey through Yangri Kharka, Langmale Kharka and Shershong will take you to the Makalu base camp at an altitude of 4870 meters above sea level. Here hikers can stand at the foot of a massive mountain and admire its grandeur. Makalu Base Camp Trek then descends into the Barun Valley, a remote and untouched valley surrounded by high peaks following the same route to the summit. You will get down at Numi where you will take a jeep or bus to Tumlingtar. From Tumlingtar, you will board an internal flight to Kathmandu which officially ends your Makalu Base Camp Trek route successfully.
